Local AI: model, memory and task belong together

The question of local AI often starts with a memory figure. How much RAM is there, how much video memory, which model fits? That matters, but it does not yet tell you whether the setup does the desired task well.

A short headline, a summary and a longer analysis demand different things. So it is worth first writing down a small selection of traceable tasks.

Three harmless comparison tasks

One possible test uses a text you wrote yourself about paper planes. The model should suggest a headline, summarise five statements and then find a contradictory measurement in the text. For each task, it is decided in advance how to recognise a usable answer.

Pure speed would only be one observation. Fast helps little if the AI misses the contradiction. Likewise, the longest answer is not automatically the most thorough.

The setup includes more than the model file: the runtime used, the interface and any additional services. A locally started interface can be connected to a remote service. Whether data stays on the computer therefore has to be checked along the actual process.

Results instead of hardware promises

A sensible comparison documents the task, the settings and the observed result. It separates available resources from practical quality. This shows whether a slower variant is good enough for the chosen task, or whether another model really gives better answers.

The find works as a nudge for small experiments of your own. A general buying recommendation cannot be drawn from it. Much more helpful is a manageable question that stays verifiable on the computer you already have.

Original finds

These links were the starting point for this post. The assessment in the text is mine; the linked posts are not my own tests.

About the date: This post was written on 11 October 2026. The archive date matches the earliest related find in the collection, not a publication at that time. Technical assessments and sources added later refer to the time of writing.
