Electric mobility: the task belongs in the comparison

A vehicle comparison is quickly reduced to one number: range, charging time or energy consumption. The actual task, however, is bigger. Which distance has to be covered, how often does it come up and what options are there along the way?
For a factual example, an invented daily route is enough. Neither personal driving data nor business transport is needed.
Keeping energy and use apart
A drive converts stored energy into movement. Losses and options for recovering energy can play a part in this. The US Department of Energy explains an efficiency comparison that includes regenerative braking. The conditions given there are part of the comparison; individual figures cannot simply be applied to any journey.
Another question concerns how the energy is stored and supplied. Battery, hydrogen and synthetic fuel are not interchangeable buzzwords. For a complete comparison, it would have to be clear in each case which steps and system boundaries are being considered.
For the invented route, you could first write down when the vehicle is needed and how much parking time is available. Only after that do you check whether a specific setup fits.
No blanket rule for switching
The question of when an existing vehicle should be replaced also covers its condition, its use and other individual requirements. A product video or a single experience report is not enough for a general answer.
A good technology post can therefore start by sorting terms and questions. It shows which details are missing for a comparison, instead of deriving a buying recommendation from an impressive number. That makes the discussion easier to follow and keeps it on a traceable task.
