# A playful 3D room as an interface

_7 October 2026 · Archive date_

An interface does not always have to consist of tables and buttons. A small 3D room can show objects and their relationships in space. This becomes interesting when the view makes a task easier to understand.

In an invented example, three shelves stand for three groups of paper models. A table shows the currently selected model, an open area the drafts that have not been assigned yet.

## Space as meaning, not decoration

The spatial order should explain something: here is the selection, there is the group, at this spot an assignment is missing. When an object is moved, the new state also has to reach the underlying data.

A pretty animation alone is not enough for this. The model could appear in its new place while the list still contains the old group. That is why the spatial view and a simple text view should convey the same meaning.

The camera is part of the controls, too. Free rotation can be fun, but it can make it harder to find a function again. For a small task, fixed views or a clearly visible way back would often be easier to follow.

## Start with a few objects

The first attempt only needs a selection, an assignment and a way to reset. After that, viewing angles, labels and input are checked. What happens on a narrow screen? Is the selected object recognisable without colour?

Such a room remains a design experiment with fictional content. No real warehouses, shipments or workflows are recreated. The important question is whether the spatial idea helps orientation. If the same task is much easier to understand in a small list, this comparison has also delivered a useful result.
