# Supermarket discounts only with an app: a question of clarity

_14 May 2026 · Archive date_

A low price is printed large on the sign, the condition attached to it much smaller. Maybe an app is needed, maybe a particular activated offer. This adds a task to your shopping: finding out which price actually applies under which conditions.

This everyday question can be looked at without judging individual retailers legally or publishing personal shopping profiles.

## An invented offer

Take a neutral example: an item normally costs three units, two with the app offer activated. The big number alone is not enough to decide. It should also be clear whether you need to sign up, when the offer applies and which step is needed before paying.

A clear offer separates the regular price, the conditional price and the action required. Anyone who cannot or does not want to use their smartphone at that moment should at least be able to see what alternative there is.

With an app, further questions come up: which functions are needed? What details are intended for using it? What is explained in the settings? The answers are in the information from the specific provider and must not be assumed to be the same for all apps.

## The effort of using it is part of the decision

A small price advantage can come with several steps. Whether that is convenient depends on how you use it. So the question cannot be answered by the size of the discount alone.

For a design comparison, a fictional offer card would make sense: three clearly labelled areas for price, condition and action. If you understand it at first glance, something has already been gained. Good software design sometimes starts with a perfectly ordinary shop sign.
