# Open-weight AI models and the question of choice

_6 May 2026 · Archive date_

An AI model can be freely available and still come with conditions for its use. Likewise, an open interface can be connected to a closed service. Without further details, the word "open" therefore does not yet describe a complete setup.

Specific questions help with the assessment: which components are available? What may be changed? How is the model run, and which dependencies remain?

## Breaking openness down into individual properties

The [Open Source Initiative describes, in its Open Source AI Definition](https://opensource.org/ai/open-source-ai-definition), requirements for use, study, modification and sharing, as well as for accessible components. This is one defined perspective on the term, not a blanket verdict on every model on offer.

For a comparison of my own, I would first put the documented properties side by side. Are model parameters available? Is there information about how it was made? Which licence applies to the parts you need? The answers can differ.

An invented text test then checks a different question: does the model suit the desired task? The openness of an offer proves neither the quality of its answers nor its suitability for every environment.

## Choice needs an understandable setup

A system stays clearer when your own texts are in a readable format and the model connection is clearly described. Then you can at least see which parts a switch would affect.

A self-run setup also needs looking after. Updates, backups and suitable hardware do not disappear because of an open licence. The advantage, where there is one, lies in having more options to make these decisions yourself.

A factual comparison therefore avoids naming an overall winner. It names the specific task and shows which control, dependencies and practical results come with the different routes.
