# A message as HTML: structure before decoration

_22 February 2023 · Archive date_

A message should first of all be understandable. If the content is a date, a place and three notes, a clear structure helps more than a large image or a complicated colour scheme.

HTML can express this structure: headings mark sections, paragraphs separate thoughts and lists group similar points. This is useful even when the message looks different in different programs.

## An invented notice

A message for a fictional paper model group could start with the topic, then give the time and the materials to bring. The link "Instructions for the model" says more than "Click here". Someone who only reads the text should still see what the link promises.

Important details belong in the actual content. If they only appear in a graphic, they can go missing when images are hidden. A plain text version should also convey the message clearly.

For a template, a small comparison is worthwhile: are the paragraphs readable without a special typeface? Does the order still make sense on a narrow screen? Can links be told apart from normal text? These questions are more concrete than wanting a "professional email".

## Design should carry the content

A restrained template is easier to reuse. The text changes, the basic structure stays: occasion, key details, next step. Extra elements only have a place if they explain something.

For a technical learning experiment, invented content and a local preview are enough. Real recipients, mass mailing or hidden tracking are not needed. This way you can study the design of a message without turning a simple HTML exercise into a mailing process.

## Original finds

These links were the starting point for this post. The assessment in the text is my own; the linked posts are not my own tests.
